Lunches: Roald Dahl Day 2016 (9.13.16)

In case you haven't noticed, we are big Roald Dahl fans.  There isn't a big Roald Dahl blog hop this year, but I couldn't let the 100th Birthday of such a fantastic author go by unnoticed!

Both kids have essentially the same lunch.  I drew the BFG (That's Big, Friendly Giant to those uninitiated!) on a tortilla with food coloring.  I'm no Quentin Blake, but I think it turned out pretty well.
Tortilla sandwich: 30g, yogurt: 9g, babybell: 1g, snozzcumber: 1g, snozzberries: 8g, dark chocolate honey mints: 14g
The  Boy also as a snack of strawberry applesauce (not pictured, 14g)

What is under the BFG.
I made a BFG tortilla sandwich, with Muhammara and ham, with a yogurt squisher, a babybell cheese, half a snozzcumber (that's a cucumber, I couldn't find the foul veggie at a regular supermarket here, so I used the next best thing), and I did find some beautiful snozzberries (ok, so they are golden raspberries stuffed with blueberries...) - bet they taste like snozzberries!

I couldn't finish a Roald Dahl lunch without a little something sweet, so there are a couple dark chocolate honey mints in each lunch.

Believe in magic, friends.  Happy Birthday, Roald Dahl.

Lunches: 9.12.16

I don't care much about football - except for the food.  So, yesterday, while The Hubby was joyfully watching his first football of the season, I made Philly cheesesteak oven sandwiches.

I neglected to write down a recipe, but I think I will make them again, and then I will blog it.  They were basically shaved steak cooked with peppers, onions, and mushrooms, along with some spices, and topped with American cheese.  I put the filling over dinner rolls that were cut in half, put the tops back on, and then baked for a few minutes until they were nice and melty.

And, it made a lot - so leftovers are in lunches!

Sandwich: 25g, grapes: 6g, apple slices: 10g, ground cherries: 4g

I got some Pocky for the kids when we went to ComicCon a couple of weeks ago - it was at a Japanese-themed booth.  I know that spring rolls are not Japanese, but the Pocky goes better in these lunches than in a regular lunch with a wrap or the like.

Spring rolls: 22g, fruit leather: 12g, Pocky: 5g, grapes: 6g, ground cherries: 5g

The Boy has two chicken spring rolls (from Trader Joe's), along with Pocky, a fruit leather, ground cherries, and grapes.  His snack is an applesauce (not pictured, 15g).

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend!  I made a wedding cake for a friend, and I will be blogging it soon, because I was super proud of it.  Really.  I took two days off work to make the cakes, to make sure it was right.

I have no problem saying... I did well.  The Bride and Groom were happy.  The cake was delicious.  Very pleased.

And now, it's time for school again!
Hey look, ground cherries!

A friend gave us some ground cherries, which The Boy decided he is especially fond of.  I always love a good fun fruit, so I'm thrilled to put them in lunches!

Ground cherries: 4g, grapes: 8g, wrap: 15g, carrots: 3g, egg: 0g

The Boy has some ground cherries, big grapes ("Sweet Celebration" variety), a wrap with ham, cheese, hummus, and spinach, along with baby rainbow carrots, and a hard boiled egg (wrapped in plastic wrap, so that it keeps it's egginess to itself.  His snack is a PB&J bar (from Trader Joe's, not pictured, 23g)

Lunches: 9.2.16

First Friday of the school year!

I found little individual containers of Nutella at the grocery store yesterday, and I knew I had to get them for the kids.  I went with a snack-style lunch today, and the kids are super excited for it.  Sometimes, they like something a little different.  The Girl has a field trip today (beginning of the school year bonding trip - super fun!), so snack-style lunch is good for her!

Nutella: 17g, apple slices: 8g, strawberries: 6g, pepperoni: 1g, plantain chips: 5g

The Boy has apple slices, nutella, strawberries, pepperoni, and plantain chips.  His snack is an applesauce (not pictured, 15g).
